Indianapolis Colts Nfl Lines Report

It's not easy being a rookie receiver trying to make the Indianapolis Colts' regular season roster. Such is the case for four undrafted free agents who realize that the chances of being with the team in the fall don't appear to be very good.

Training camp has become as much a place to learn about life in the National Football League as it has trying to win a job with the Colts for Skyler Fulton, Elgin Hicks, Eric Hill and Chris Bernard.

Those four, along with first-year receiver DeAndrew Rubin, face the daunting task of trying to make their respective marks in a crowded field. Indianapolis could very well have one of the deepest receiving corps in the NFL this season, headed by All-Pro Marvin Harrison and rising star Reggie Wayne.

The Colts also return key backups Troy Walters, Brandon Stokley, Aaron Moorehead and Brad Pyatt. But there is room for hope. Moorehead and Pyatt both made the Indianapolis roster as undrafted free agents a year ago.

And, with Walters suffering a possible season-ending broken right arm in a pre-season loss to the New York Jets, there could be room for someone to make the team.

"We all know being young free agents, it's already tough to make the team. That's the challenge that you face right off the bat is actually making that 52-man (regular season) roster. The fact that we have the best receiving corps in the NFL makes it that much harder," said Bernard, who played collegiately at Kentucky.

"But, at the same time, when you got guys like that on your team, if you could somehow emulate or look up to them and see what they're what they're doing, maybe someday you can become like them."

Being in an NFL training camp can afford an undrafted player plenty of opportunities. If he can't latch on with the team that originally signed him, he will have the chance to display his skills to scouts around the league. "That's one of the things about being a free agent. Your percentages are low as far as getting on the team, but at the same time you get to showcase for other teams," Bernard said.

"If the Colts decide that you're not the one that they're interested in, maybe another team will be. We just have to go out there and play hard and do our thing. Hopefully, at the end of the day, the Colts will say that they like you."

CAMP CALENDAR
Indianapolis has moved its training camp headquarters from its base at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., back to the team's westside Indianapolis complex. The final two weeks of pre-season workouts will be in Indianapolis.
